Alwan for the Arts and 3rd i NY have launched the second annualAlwan 3rd i Awards Competition 2014 and are soliciting new, short films and/or video art (produced 2012 or later) by Arab/ Middle Eastern/ North African/South and Central Asian (MENASA region) directors OR films about those regions and their diasporas by filmmakers of all backgrounds.
The Alwan 3rd i Awards Competition aims to present the very best in recent short films and video art that increase awareness of the creative vitality and sociopolitical realities of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as their global diasporas. Films of all genres are welcome. Please limit submissions to 20 minutes or less total running time. All submissions will be screened and selected for screening by an appointed selection committee.

A post-screening salon session will provide participating filmmakers and artists the benefit of feedback from the diverse and engaging audience that Alwan and 3rd i NY have cultivated over the last ten years of intense programming. Well-versed in the history, languages, and cultures of the North African, Middle Eastern, and South and Central Asian regions, our audience thrives on healthy debate and cross-cultural learning.

In addition to the national and international documentaries and features that Alwan and 3rd i screen on a monthly basis and the Alwan 3rd i Film Festival, the Alwan 3rd i Awards Competition is a time to celebrate and reward exceptional short films, experimental work, video art, animation and shorter form works, as well create opportunities for emerging media-makers.
Alwan and 3rd i NY are proud to provide this opportunity and these awards to showcase local, independent, and experimental pieces, which are aesthetically, politically, theoretically and/or technically innovative, and to provide the space for filmmakers and film aficionados to meet.
HOW IT WORKS

Submissions

All submissions must be received by December 31st, 2014. If selected, you will be notified on or before January 15th, 2015. The Alwan 3rd i Awards screening will take place at the Alwan for the Arts space at 16 Beaver Street in Lower Manhattan on January 20th, 2015.
To submit please include ALL of the following information in this format
1) Original and English title, synopsis, running time (20 minutes or less), country, year of production, and languages used / subtitles
2) URL link to video online (Vimeo, YouTube, etc) OR DVD preview copy
3) Director bio, cast/crew list
4) Contact email, phone number, and website if available
5) Film still shots (2-5) total, as 300 dpi jpg or tiff files
6) Screening history/awards

(Please note this number is an estimate number as the films/video art to be screened will be determined by both the number of submissions and the quality of these submissions.)

About 3rd i NY
3rd I New York’s monthly film/video/media salon is designed by local filmmakers and cultural producers to showcase the works of independent media makers of South Asian, Central Asian, and Arab descent. Providing alternative forums for these filmmakers who often have few venues to showcase their work and whose cultures and histories are often demonized or misrepresented in mainstream media, not only increases their visibility, but also provides a social forum for peers and audiences to participate in an ongoing discussion.

3rd i NY is proud to co-sponsor this upcoming SAWCC event

The South Asian Women’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) will be presenting a screening of new short experimental film and video at Subject LES in New York City on December 14, 2014. This event will be part of a day-long series of media arts focused talks and screenings.

SAWCC invites submissions from South Asian women artists/directors. Works can address any theme or subject matter. The focus of this screening is to highlight independent and experimental film and video shorts that will engage diverse audiences on a range of aesthetic, socio-political, and/or conceptual levels. Presenters will receive a modest honorarium.

This program will be curated by Shelly Bahl (visual and media artist and member of the SAWCC board).

Submission Guidelines
Works must be under 15 minutes and produced in 2010 or later.
Works curated from this CFS must be downloadable. MOV or .MP4 files, preferably in H.264 codec.
Submissions must include all of the following as a single Word document:

• Name of artist/director

• Full contact information (address, phone, email, website)

• Title of work, date of production, running time

• Direct web link to preview film or video project online.

• Direct web link to download film or video project. We will only download the final set of selected works

• Project Synopsis (250 words maximum)

• Brief biography of the artist/director (150 words maximum)

• Screening history and awards

Submissions must be sent via email with a direct web link to the artist/director/project website, YouTube or Vimeo account to view the work online (please provide passwords if necessary). Please label subject heading as “SAWCC Screening 2014: YourFirstName YourLastName” and sent to: submissions@sawcc.org

Alwan and 3rd i NY are soliciting new, short videos (produced 2009 or later) by South Asian and Arab directors OR videos about those regions and their diasporas by filmmakers of all backgrounds. Videos of all genres are welcome. Please limit submissions to 20 minutes or less total running time.

After two exciting and well-attended slam screenings based on our first open call in 2011, we are eager to see what the 2012 edition holds in store. The NYASAFF Short Video Slam aims to present the best in recent short videos that increase awareness of the creative vitality and sociopolitical realities of South and Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, as well as their global diasporas. If selected, you will be notified by May 7, 2012. The NYASAFF Short Video Slam will take place in late May 2012 at the Alwan for the Arts Space at 16 Beaver Street in Lower Manhattan.

Alwan for the Arts & 3rd i NY have been co-presenting monthly film screenings and a combined film festival for over 5 years. We’re itching to get back to our roots by providing an informal, salon-style venue to showcase local independent and experimental pieces that are aesthetically, politically, theoretically and/or technically innovative as well serve as a meeting place filmmakers and film aficionados to meet. Please note that this event is separate from art video shorts programs that we curate thematically within the festival itself (tentatively scheduled to take place in late fall 2012), and for which, we invite guest curators to develop on particular themes.
