1 -1 = 1

The artists in the Experimental Video / Art Program all wield the formal elements of video and performance to explore modes of engagement that challenge our passive roles as viewers. Repetition, and rhythm are utilized in these videos to reference or establish a logic that then folds in on itself or breaks down over time. Through generative strategies of entropy and poetic tension, the artists in 1-1=1 short circuit conventional narratives, and offer an experiential critique of different power structures and the forms through which they function.

About the 2013 Alwan Film Festival

Using film to unify and bring together a diverse community, the Alwan Film Festival’s mission is twofold: To promote mutual understanding between the misrepresented communities of the Middle East & North Africa, and the public at large; and, To work against prejudice by giving filmmakers of these backgrounds a public platform from which to explore and articulate their points of view.

To date, Alwan for the Arts has organized a total of 12 film festivals at outside theater venues, and sponsored individual and thematic series screenings at universities and museums, in addition to its year-round monthly film series at its own space in Manhattan. Initially called the Alwan Film Festival, since establishing a partnership with 3rd i NY in 2007, for several years, it was for a time renamed the New York Arab and South Asian Film Festival. Partners have included: NYU, Columbia University, Deep Dish TV, Art in General, SAWCC, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and numerous ethnic community groups and activist organizations.

The Alwan for the Arts 13th Film Festival will showcase the best in recent features, documentaries, and shorts from North Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and their Diasporas. Filmmakers from these regions are forging new film languages and styles, bringing both nuanced and sensitive depictions of everyday life, and extraordinarily creative visions. From documentaries that honor the perspectives of people whose viewpoints are rarely reflected in mainstream media, to highly inventive comedies, social allegories, and experimental videos, the festival offers NY audiences opportunities to engage with films and filmmakers that challenge our notions of simple categories such as “world cinema” and “activist media.”
