12:00 am - 6:00 pm
Alwan for the Arts, 16 Beaver St. 4th Fl., Between Beaver and Broad Streets.

Postmark Submission Deadline: April 23, 2012

Screening: Late May 2012

Alwan and 3rd i NY are soliciting new, short videos (produced 2009 or later) by South Asian and Arab directors OR videos about those regions and their diasporas by filmmakers of all backgrounds. Videos of all genres are welcome. Please limit submissions to 20 minutes or less total running time.

After two exciting and well-attended slam screenings based on our first open call in 2011, we are eager to see what the 2012 edition holds in store. The NYASAFF Short Video Slam aims to present the best in recent short videos that increase awareness of the creative vitality and sociopolitical realities of South and Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, as well as their global diasporas. If selected, you will be notified by May 7, 2012. The NYASAFF Short Video Slam will take place in late May 2012 at the Alwan for the Arts Space at 16 Beaver Street in Lower Manhattan.

Alwan for the Arts & 3rd i NY have been co-presenting monthly film screenings and a combined film festival for over 5 years. We’re itching to get back to our roots by providing an informal, salon-style venue to showcase local independent and experimental pieces that are aesthetically, politically, theoretically and/or technically innovative as well serve as a meeting place filmmakers and film aficionados to meet. Please note that this event is separate from art video shorts programs that we curate thematically within the festival itself (tentatively scheduled to take place in late fall 2012), and for which, we invite guest curators to develop on particular themes.

Participating filmmakers will benefit from the feedback of the diverse and engaging audience Alwan & 3rd i NY has cultivated over the last few years of intense programming. Well versed in the history, languages, and cultures of the North African, Middle Eastern, and South and Central Asian regions, our audience thrives on healthy debate and cross-cultural learning.
